CARNIVAL RACES QUIZ NIGHT in aid of
The quiz held at the Crown in Horwich on February 27th was enjoyed by all seventeen teams that took part, including seven teams competing from Horwich RMI Harriers, two teams from Horwich Cycling Club and a combined Harrier and HCC team. The Harrier teams were Dark Peak, Horridges, The Three Stooges, Smithies, Maybe Baby, Harriers A and Harriers B. The Horwich Cycling Club teams were Nitwits and We Miss John and the combined team was Not Dallas. There were a number of teams in contention for the prizes, with a tie for first place on 64 points between Half A Crown and Ezzos Heros. The two teams couldn’t be separated in the first tie break question. The second tie break question of “In which year were Horwich RMI Harriers formed?” finally proved decisive with Half A Crown guessing closest. This meant the team retained their Carnival Races quiz title as last year they won under the name of Chloe and the Pirates. In third place on 63 points were Dumbels + 1. The highest scoring of the Harriers and Cycling Club teams were Not Dallas who finished on 62 points. The winning team won £25, second team £15 and third team four pints of Holts drinks.
As well as the quiz being great fun, together with the raffle, it helped to raise a total of £220 for Bolton Hospice. Well done everyone for taking part.
Thanks to everyone for supporting the quiz. See you at the next one.

Carnival Races Thrilled to Receive Horwich Town Council Backing.
With expenditure that exceeds £20,000 just to stage the races, the Carnival Races Committee is constantly working to raise the necessary funds. The committee is therefore delighted to report that the quest to raise the necessary funds for 2008 has recently received a tremendous boost. Having been honoured to be granted supported organisation status by Horwich Town Council earlier in the autumn, the Horwich Carnival Races Committee was then delighted to receive news of the Council agreeing to give £5000 towards next year’s events. This is a terrific degree of backing by the Council and the Races Committee is extremely grateful for this level of financial support. With support such as this, the races should again prove a tremendous success and continue to put Horwich on the map.
It is the races committee’s long term aim to introduce an international element to the day, helping to widen the events’ attraction and increasing the reputation of Horwich as an ideal venue for sport and a popular destination to visit. Working closely with Horwich Town Council, the Races Committee aims to continue to raise the profile of Horwich across the UK and far beyond.
Many thanks again to the Horwich Town Council for its invaluable support.

Huge crowds descended on the town of
to watch the annual Horwich Carnival Races. Crowds gathered around
the closed circuit, with hundreds of competitors, their families and supporters
lining the streets, together with the Carnival crowd, in anticipation of an
exciting day’s racing. No one was to be disappointed as this year’s Horwich
Carnival Races saw the climax of the terrific running Tour of Horwich and a
whole host of superb running and cycling races. There was a terrific 600 finishers in the three running events and nearly 250 in the cycling events.
On the day the weather just held out to give some sparkling racing, with leading
athletes and cyclists from all over the country once again choosing the
races to put on a spectacular display and in the running races set some
of the fastest times of the year over 5K. Evidence of this included two
World Best times ever being set, by Hallamshire Harrier Carole
Wolstenholme (Over 60, 19.27) and Over 80 Stephen Charlton
(Vets AC, 22.41).
From a local perspective one of the highlights of the day was the
Horwich RMI Harrier ladies winning bronze team medals
(45 to 54 category) in The Emerson Group British Masters 5K
Road Running Championships. Denise Wakefield led the ladies superbly, finishing thirty-ninth (sixth Over 50), Nicole Kirkham improving with each race finished in forty-fifth (seventh Over 50) and completing the team and winning a superb Silver in the Over 70 category was Lola Smal. Lola, who celebrated her 74th birthday three days later, was understandably over the moon that she had played her part in a team effort that secured such a prestigious award. Colin Rigby ran a great race, finishing eighth overall in a time of 15.50 and won a terrific bronze medal in the Over 35 category. Winning the Over 35 category, and runner-up in the race, was local athlete Paul Freary (Belgrave Harriers) in a time of 15.25. Colin Rigby, together with Tony Rowlands, Ian Selby and John Coope enabled the Horwich vets team to finish fourth in the event. There were 214 finishers in the Emerson Group BMAF 5K.
This year saw the inaugural BMAF 5K Road Walking Championships held at Horwich.
There were twenty-nine finishers (21 men and 8 ladies) with the oldest 81 year old Edwin Grocock completing the course in 37.37. First man was Mark Williams (M40,Tamworth AC) in 22.19. First over 50 was Rod Dunn (Leicester WC) in 27.07. First local man was Greg Smith of Lancashire WC who was second over 50 in 27.15. First lady was Lisa Kehler (L40, Wolverhampton & Bilston) in a time of 23.43. Second and first over 50 was Ann Wheeler (Nuneaton Harriers) in 28.48. First local lady was Hazel Fairhurst of Lancashire WC who was second over 40 in a time of 31.17.
In the Georgia Pacific Horwich Carnival 5k Race (incorportating both Warburtons Northern Championships and event 5 of the Sweatshop/Mizuno Horwich Tour) there were again some good performances from Horwich athletes. James Kevan had a great run to finish third Junior Man in a personal best time of 15.51. Steve Nolan was Horwich’s next finisher, winning the Over 45 category and securing the Over 45 title in the Tour, after a tussle all week with Frank Cordingley of
For the ladies Janet Rashleigh had yet another great race after competing all week, winning the Over 45 race category and finishing in a superb overall runner’s up position in the Tour and first Over 45. Christine Sweatman ran well to win the Over 50 category. There were 218 finishers in the Georgia Pacific 5K running race.
In the Bluemantle Horwich Carnival 1 Mile Fun Run fourteen year old Horwich RMI Harrier Jamie Crompton was the winner in a terrific time of 4.27, also securing victory in the three event U17s Fun Run Tour. Runner up in the Fun Run was team-mate April Stevenson, in another tremendous time (5.06), who also won the U17s Fun Run Tour title. Zachary Howe finished in a fine sixth. Next Harrier to finish was Katie Voce in fourteenth place, also finishing runner-up in the Fun Run tour and winning the U14 Tour category. Luke Massey finished thirtieth and won the U10 Tour title. There were a terrific 168 finishers in the Fun Run.
Amongst others congratulations to Blackrod County Primary School, winners of the Key Stage 2 Fun Run Schools Challenge Trophy awarded for the greatest level of participation from a local school.
The Craftprint Youths Cycle Races (U16s) were again a terrific success with over sixty riders in the different age categories. There was local success for the Gore sisters from Blackrod who both finished first in their age groups, Sophie in the U14’s and Clare in the U12’s. The Bolton Hot Wheels Go Ride obstacle relay again proved a great crowd pleaser with fifteen children taking part, aged between 8 and 12 years.
The Horwich Town Council British Cycling National Women’s Circuit Race Championships event saw an excellent turn out of forty-six riders. The best women riders from across the country took advantage of the closed 1 mile relatively flat circuit based around the shops and commercial areas of Horwich Town Centre, to put on a glittering display of fast and aggressive bike racing.
A closely fought race over 25 miles was won by reigning Women’s Circuit Champion Lizzie Armitstead (Global Racing Team), in a time just over the hour. This was Lizzie’s second successive championship race victory and her Global team took the first three places in the race.
The David Lloyd National Tricycle Championship race proved another spectacular sight, with Alan Shuttleworth of Altrincham RC coming out on top.
The Green Machine I Lap Cycle race for 5-18 year olds had fifty-nine entries, nearly three times the number of last year. It was great to see these novices given the chance to race on the circuit and show such enthusiasm for the sport.
The final race of the day was the Don Burnett Car Sales Senior 2/3/4/ Junior cycle race, which had a record number of seventy-seven riders taking part. The race was won by Martin Freeman (Team Corley Cycles). Lancashire RC’s Nathan Harrison was the highest placed local rider finishing in third place after the 18 miles, with Gary Vose from Heapey, who rides for Lune RCC finishing ninth and Lancashire RC rider Tony Workman in tenth.
Horwich Carnival Races yet again provided some sparkling racing with leading athletes from all over the country once again choosing the races to set some of the fastest times of the year over 5K. Evidence of this included two World Best times being set in the Emerson Group British Masters 5K Road Championships, by Hallamshire Harrier Carole Wolstenholme (Over 60, 19.27) and Over 80 Stephen Charlton (Vets AC, 22.41). In fact, this event produced no fewer than forty top twenty 2007 ranked places in the men’s veteran categories M35 to M65, plus three in the top eight of the M70 category, one in the top eight of the M75 category and1st in M80 category. Thirteen ladies finished in the top 20 ranked places in the L35 to L55 categories, plus three in the top ten of the L60 category, one in the top four of the L65 category and one in the top five in the L70 category.
