From a local perspective one of the highlights of the day was the Horwich RMI Harrier ladies (Denise Wakefield, Nicole Kirkham and Lola Smal) winning bronze team medals in The Emerson Group British Masters 5K Road Running Championships (45 to 54 category). Lola, who celebrated her 74th birthday three days later, was understandably over the moon that she had played her part in a team effort that secured such a prestigious team award and thrilled to have won individual silver in the Over 70 category. Colin Rigby ran a great race, finishing eighth overall in a time of 15.50 and won a terrific bronze medal in the Over 35 category. The Bolton Hot Wheels Go Ride obstacle relay again proved a great crowd pleaser with fifteen children taking part, aged between 8 and 12 years.

The Horwich Town Council British Cycling National Women’s Circuit Race Championships event saw an excellent turn out of forty-six riders. The best women riders from across the country put on a glittering display of fast and aggressive bike racing. A closely fought race over 25 miles was won by reigning Women’s Circuit Champion Lizzie Armitstead (Global Racing Team), in a time just over the hour. This was Lizzie’s second successive championship race victory and her Global team took the first three places in the race.

The David Lloyd National Tricycle Championship race proved another spectacular sight, with Alan Shuttleworth of Altrincham RC coming out on top.

The Green Machine I Lap Cycle race for 5-18 year olds had fifty-nine entries, nearly three times the number of last year. It was great to see the young novices given the chance to race on the circuit and show such enthusiasm for the sport.
